Once upon a time, a temple was being constructed not far from the city. The temple involved a lot of woodwork, so many laborers were busy cutting wood. Logs and beams were scattered everywhere, and the work of sawing the wood was in full swing. All the laborers had to go to the city for lunch, so no one was around for an hour during lunchtime. One day, when it was time for lunch, all the workers left their work and went to the city. One log was left half-sawn, and the laborers had inserted a wedge into the half-sawn log so that it would be easier to continue sawing it later.
At that moment, a group of monkeys hopped and jumped around. Among them was a mischievous monkey who loved to meddle with things for no reason and create trouble. It was his habit to cause mischief. The leader of the monkeys ordered everyone not to meddle with the things lying around. All the monkeys went towards the trees, but the naughty monkey stayed behind and started causing trouble.
His eyes landed on the half-sawn log. He immediately jumped on it and started looking at the wedge stuck in the middle. Then, he noticed a saw lying nearby. He picked it up and started rubbing it on the log. The sound of the saw, "kirr-kirr," started to make noise, and the monkey, frustrated, threw the saw away. In the language of the monkeys, the "kirr-kirr" sound meant "good-for-nothing."
The mischievous monkey became curious about what would happen if he could pull the wedge out from the log. He grabbed the wedge and started trying to move it. The wedge was firmly wedged between the two halves of the log, and the two parts of the log pressed it tightly, almost like a strong spring clip.
The monkey, excited with his progress, tried even harder. As he pulled, the wedge started to move, and the monkey felt proud of his strength.
In his excitement, the monkey didn’t notice that his tail had gotten stuck between the two halves of the log. He gave it a big pull, and as soon as the wedge was pulled out, the two halves of the log snapped together like a clip, trapping the monkey’s tail. The monkey screamed in pain.
Just then, the laborers returned. Seeing the workers, the monkey tried to run away with all his strength, but as he did, his tail broke off. The monkey fled, screaming, with his broken tail in tow.
This story teaches that curiosity and mischief without thinking can lead to trouble, and it's better to act with caution and care.
